Continuing its tradition of holding mapping events for Open Data Day, Kathmandu Living Labs organized an Open Data Day event in Pokhara at Western Region Campus. This year’s Open Data Day was the second time that KLL had held the event outside the Kathmandu Valley, and occurred on March 5, 2016.
Open Data Day is a day when open data and open source enthusiasts share the importance of open data. Through workshops and mapathons, people show the use and value of open data for society.
Open Data Day Pokhara began with talks by several notable people, including Dr. Swarnim Wagle, former member of the National Planning Commission, Dr. Nama Budhathoki, Executive Director of KLL, and Hon. Rabindra Adhikari, member of the Constitutional Assembly.
The remainder of Open Data Day was devoted to hands-on activities using open data. Students chose one of three activities: Mapathon, Data Expedition, or Geocaching. Students learned to create maps with open data in the Mapathon. The Data Expedition encouraged students to think of new ways to use open data in for disaster resilience. The students who participated in the Geocaching used maps created with open data to navigate and find hidden caches.
